Med-Surg Numbering: Syllabus Uses the 16th Edition
Finding (Oct 14, 2026): the syllabus cites the Hinkle 15th edition (2022), but its chapter numbers match the 16th edition (Wolters Kluwer, published October 2025). The local PDFs in textbooks/ are the 15th edition (title page: 15th Edition, copyright 2022). The syllabus is newer than the book, not older.
Why the numbers shift: Ch. 1-18 are numbered the same in both editions. The 16th edition splits the 15th edition’s Ch. 19 (chest and lower respiratory tract disorders) into two chapters, so every chapter from chronic pulmonary disease onward is one higher in the 16th edition. The 16th edition ends at Ch. 69 (disaster nursing), which is why “Ch. 69” exists in the reading plan but not in the 15th edition TOC.
Rule: for assigned chapters 21 and above, subtract 1 to get the 15th edition chapter. Every topic the course assigns is still covered in the 15th edition.

The textbooks/exam03/ and textbooks/exam04/ folders already hold the correct 15e chapters.
Caveats:
- The 16th edition is a revision, so some numbers and guidelines may be newer than in the 15e PDFs. Lecture slides built from the 16e can differ from the 15e text; log those in the lecture-vs-textbook pages and study the slide value for the exam.
- The 16e chapter split in the respiratory unit was read from the publisher’s unit summary, not the book itself. Topic coverage is not affected.
- Durham & Chapman is the 4th edition in both the syllabus and the local PDFs; no shift.
